Membership Opportunities
Membership opportunities as a firefighter with the Westmere Fire Department include Interior, Exterior, and Station Support classification. Below are short descriptions for each role. We hope it will assist you in finding your preferred path to volunteering with us. No matter how ambitious your goals are, we will provide the knowledge and training to help you achieve them!
Interior Firefighter: Interior firefighting involves entering a burning structure or hazardous location to locate, confine, and extinguish a fire or mitigate a dangerous condition. This specialized and highly technical task requires well-trained firefighters equipped with proper protective gear and a thorough understanding of fire behavior and suppression techniques. The goal of interior firefighting is to save lives, protect property, and prevent the spread of fire within a building.
Exterior Firefighter: Exterior firefighting involves the strategic use of various tools and equipment to mitigate hazards and control fires. Exterior firefighting duties include deploying hoses and supplying water to the fire apparatus, performing stabilization and rescues at motor vehicle crashes, extinguishment of outside fires, operation of fire apparatus, supplying interior firefighters with tools and equipment, assisting with scene lighting and safety, maintaining personnel accountability, and facilitating communications.
Station Support Firefighter: Station Support Firefighters are essential to the health and safety of fire department personnel. Station Support firefighters respond as needed to drills and extended duration incidents, providing firefighters with hot/cold beverages, snacks, and other supplies. In the station, they facilitate sanitizing equipment, refilling SCBA bottles, restocking supplies, and completing other tasks needed to restore the apparatus to a ready state. Station Support firefighters assist with logistical, administrative, and operational tasks, which in turn allows the frontline firefighters to focus on their core duties.
